Mosquito Treatment:

So you don't like those pesky mosquitoes. Here's a
tip that was given at a recent gardening forum.
Put some water in a white dinner plate and add a
couple drops of Lemon Fresh Joy dish detergent. Set the dish on
your porch, patio, picnic table, park bench, or other outdoor area.
Not sure what attracts them, the lemon smell, the
white plate colour, or what, BUT ... mosquitoes flock to it,
and drop dead shortly after drinking the Lemon Fresh Joy/water mixture,
and usually within about 10 feet of the plate.

TRY IT---it works just super! It may seem trivial,
but it may also help to control mosquitoes around your home,
(especially in areas where the
West Nile virus is reaching epidemic
proportions in mosquitoes, birds, and humans).

Pass this on to anyone who likes sitting out in
the evening, or when they're having a cook out.

(From Sweetie, Singapore).

FOOD CALORIES

M   E   D   I   C   A   L        T   I   P   S

Walk about 2.5 miles a day and you won't gain a pound.

Two handfuls of pecan nuts a day can lower levels of 'bad' cholestrol by 10 per cent.

Eating legumes - beans, peas, or peanuts - at least four times a week gives a 19 per cent lower risk of heart disease than someone who eats them less than once a week.

High fat foods at lunch cause drowsiness and a decline in performance.

Unless you want to be a bodybuilder, do not over-exercise. One set of weight exercises with 8-12 repetitions is adequate to keep muscles healthy and strong.

Spicy foods can help you lose weight by boosting metabolic rate.

Drinking water, fruit juice, rosemary or peppermint teas will help get rid of hangovers.

'AGE PROOF YOUR BODY'
DR. Anjali Mukherjee
NUTRITIONIST

Dr. Anjali Mukerjee, MD and India’s premier nutritionist, co-founded Health-Total, along with husband Mr. Saurabh Mukerjee. Health-Total is a ‘Holistic Health Centre’ that treats the cause of weight gain and weight loss with a focus on good health. For more information, you can check out www.health-total.com

‘AGE PROOF YOUR BODY’ Says Anjali Mukherjee

Most of us feel that as we grow older our skin will naturally age too, our waistline will expand, and hairline will recede, arteries will weaken and so on. Renowned health and fitness expert Anjali Mukerjee advices you on how to slow down the aging process by changing your diet…

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A HEALTHY DIET?

The age to which you live need not be determined by your parent age. You can reshape your health problems, provided you know how to go about it. The length of your life, the way you feel, how you look depends to a great extent on your diet and the lifestyle choices that you make.

You can post- pone disease and ill health by making changes in the food to eat. Because you eat food at least three times a day. It has a profound effect on almost every aspect of mind and body. It affects your enzyme, your hormones, therefore, your mood, blood, body organs, bone & health in general.

DISEASE & HEREDITARY

Many aspects of your body are genetically coded. All of us are programmed to precipitate some form of disease at a particular age. Our heredity can to a certain extent influence our state of health. But not entirely! If your parents have suffered from heart disease and will also discover that you have clogged arteries it is possibly not due to heredity but due to similar dietary patterns and lifestyle!

YOUR DIET & YOU

“ Life is too short, let us live it up”, some say! But how many of us ‘think’ about the quality and health benefits of food before putting it in the mouth? We proceed to eat foods that accelerate the aging process, cause cancer, diabetes & heart disease, weaken their bones, make them obese to the extent that they are not able to ‘live it up’ any more. Health problems attack them early in life, and they by force cannot eat. If you get accustomed to a particular diet, you will find it very difficult to change your eating pattern later in life. Such people usually end up with a long list of medication and diets, which they find impossible to follow because their taste buds and habits have robbed them of health.

When you changed the foods you eat the difference that it can make to your health can be astonishing. Some problems that you may have thought were genetic may vanish. Your success at eliminating health problems greatly depends on your motivational levels. If you are motivated and willing, you can gain a new level of health and a new body. Fortunately for us the human body is very forgiving. The best time to get healthy is—NOW!

At any given age you can let the natural power of food work for you.

HAYFEVER

Ways to minimise the misery:

Vacuum and damp-dust frequently.

Wear sunglasses outdoors.

Keep windows closed or ajar.

Splash the eyes with cold water frequently to dislodge any
pollen.

Holiday on the coast where pollen counts are lower.

Apply Vaseline to the nostrils to prevent pollen from clinging
to the lining of the nose.

Medicinal remedies include anti-histamines, eye drops, etc.
(NB: Always seek medical advice).

PROTECT YOUR EYES:

Swap one cup of tea or coffee for a glass of juice; increase
your consumption of bananas, yellow peppers and sweetcorn.

The bright colours of these fruits and vegetables come from plant
pigments with amazing protective effects for our eyes. They
help to reduce the risk of cataracts and glaucoma - the major
causes of blindness in later life.

PREVENT HAIR LOSS:

Eat shellfish such as crab or take a multivitamin and mineral

supplement containing zinc and copper.

Copper is a vital component in melanin, the pigment that gives
colour to your hair and skin.

Zinc is needed for hair growth, and, therefore, helps to prevent thinning.

Kelp also aids hair growth.

According to clinical nutritionist Dr. Gillian McKeith, most people could benefit from restoring the alkaline balance of their bodies by improving their diets.

"Foods which contain added flavourings and dyes such as fizzy drinks, fast food and microwave meals, are difficult to digest and this puts a strain on the body. The body has to work harder to digest these foods so we end up producing more acidic by-products - while our cells actually need alkalinity for optimum function. The body maintains the alkalinity of the blood by pushing this excess acid out through the skin and the urine.

It also neutralises these by-products by using calcium and magnesium from the bones... We can rebalance our bodies by eating more fruits and vegetables. Although these are acidic, when digested they're alkaline-forming because of their high mineral content."

Six steps to beautiful skin

By Hollee Actman Becker
From TheKnot.com

Perfect skin is probably the most highly desired element of beauty — and for many people, it's also the most elusive. "If you were born with lovely skin, consider yourself lucky," says makeup artist Bobbi Brown. "For the rest of us, the quest for a good complexion often proves frustrating, as so much of what affects our skin is completely out of our control."

Genetics play a big part — no potions or lotions will ever change the genetics of your skin. Stress is another detrimental factor; it can overdry already dry skin and trigger breakouts in oily or difficult skin.

The secret to beautiful skin, then, lies in taking care of the issues you can control — getting adequate sleep, drinking plenty of water, engaging in physical activity. "Good skin is not just about what you put on your skin," Brown explains, "but how you conduct your life."

So think ahead. Be aware that both smoking and sun worshipping can age your face measurably. "My advice is to be your own skin expert," says Brown. "Look at your face in the mirror and see what's going on. If it's summer, your face may be drier on the surface — thanks to air conditioning — but oilier underneath. If it's the middle of winter, or if you're travelling a lot by plane, chances are, your skin is super-dry. The idea is not to have just one product or one daily routine, but a flexible program that makes your skin healthy, smooth and clear." Below, a sample routine.

Clean and clear
Start by cleansing dry or sensitive skin with a gentle, non-stripping gel cleanser. If you have oily, acne-prone skin, find a gentle gel formula that's made specifically for your skin type, and follow with a non-alcoholic toner. Those containing alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) work especially well to help smooth the skin’s texture.

Scrub-a-dub-dub
On days when you really need to exfoliate, use a gentle, grainy scrub (skip this step if you've got sensitive skin). If you've got oily skin, you'll want to exfoliate twice weekly, concentrating on blackhead-prone areas like the nose and chin.

Do the dew
If your skin is dry, use a rich moisturizer that absorbs completely into your skin. At night, use an even heavier moisturizing cream. And if you have any extremely dry spots, apply an AHA lotion all over your face and a richer hydrating cream on those areas. Remember, notes Brown, you don't have to treat your whole face in the same way. Oilier skin types should opt for either a gel, oil-free moisturizer or mattefying cream. Before applying your makeup, take a minute to brush your hair or teeth while your moisturizer absorbs.

Look, Ma, no hands
Without even realizing it, you may be wiping away makeup and adding oil and dirt particles to your skin to boot. Try to keep your hands away from your face during the day. Catch yourself if you pull on your eyelashes or rub your chin. "Habits like these are difficult to change," says Brown, "but both your makeup and general comportment will benefit if you stop."

Take it off
At the end of the day, start your cleansing process all over again. Brown recommends using a non-oily eye makeup remover on a clean cotton pad to wipe away mascara, liner and shadow. "Oily removers can aggravate eyes and cause makeup to travel all over your face, making it more difficult to wash off," she explains. Once your eye makeup is removed, use your cleansing gel to remove all foundation, concealer and powder. Then dip a Q-tip into the remover and run it gently over your eyelashes to eliminate any residual mascara.

When to go pro
"When things get serious and you can't handle a skin-care problem on your own," says Brown, "don't waste your time and money at the cosmetic counter — seek professional help." Glycolic peels or an exolift treatment (in which a liquid polymer is applied to the skin with tape, taking dirt and grime with it when the tape is removed) are two excellent in-office dermatology processes for troubled skin.

EATING LESS, LIVING LONGER

One of the most promising areas of research sounds suspiciously like dieting but isn’t. For more than 60 years, scientists have known that animals live longer, healthier lives by eating less.

“Caloric restriction is the heavy hitter in longevity research,” Cristofalo said. “At this point, caloric restriction is the only known way to significantly increase the life span of warm-blooded animals, at least mice and rats.”

As opposed to dieting, which has a short-term goal of weight loss, caloric restriction represents a lifelong approach to food consumption. The basic objective is to eat fewer calories without sacrificing the nutrition of a normal diet.

In studies underway since 1987 at the National Institute on Aging, rhesus monkeys are randomly selected to eat a normal diet or to eat a diet that has about 30 percent fewer calories. The caloric-restricted diet is fortified with vitamins, minerals and trace elements to provide the same nutrition as the usual diet.

The effect of caloric restriction on life span won’t be known until the monkeys begin to die. However, a number of beneficial effects have already been observed, such as better regulation of blood glucose and insulin levels, lower levels of fat in the blood, and higher levels of HDL, the “good” cholesterol that helps reduce the risk of coronary disease.

“Essentially, we’ve seen the same beneficial effects in monkeys that we observed in rodents,” said George Roth, chief of molecular physiology and genetics at the NIA.

How caloric restriction might increase life span remains unknown, but several theories exist. The most prominent theory revolves around oxidative stress. Studies have shown that caloric restriction increases the production of enzymes that neutralize oxygen free radicals in animals.

Roth has a different theory. “I think with aging a person goes from a very ordered [biologic] state to a disordered state,” he said. “Caloric restriction slows the flow of energy and allows the body to use energy more efficiently. It’s sort of like running a car at a lower engine speed. The car lasts longer and doesn’t wear out as quickly.”

No plans are in the works to study the effect of caloric restriction on human longevity, primarily because of complications related to lack of motivation and willpower to eat fewer calories. However, Roth thinks short-term studies might identify factors that retard the aging process.

“Then we might be able to design a drug that could mimic the metabolic effects [of caloric restriction] without requiring a person to cut back on calories,” he said. “You could eat all you wanted, and the drug would trick the body into thinking you were eating less.”
Such pharmaceutical trickery literally would “allow you to have your cake and eat it, too,” Roth added. As an added bonus, you wouldn’t grow older worrying about the calories.

APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY

The following is an excerpt from LIFE TRIUMPHANT, a  book of  psychology written by Dr. Henry Knight Miller:

Ten Laws of Life

(1)   THOU SHALL FILL THE LUNGS WITH FRESH AIR (The  law of  oxidation).

You can live weeks without food, days without water, but only a few minutes without air.  Pack the  lungs with a succession of  short, sharp breaths.  The breath is life.  If you only half breathe, you are only half alive.

(2)  THOU SHALL NOT EAT TOO MUCH SUGAR AND STARCH, NOR TOO RAPIDLY (The law of nutrition).

A pound of sugar per month is enough for a whole family.  We are all sugar poisoned.  Cut down three-fourths on sugar.  Avoid too much starchy food, such as excessive white potatoes and white bread.  Eat whole-wheat bread and more green vegetables such as lettuce, celery and spinach.  Chew your food thoroughly.  Be cheerful while eating.  Never eat when angry, worried or in fear.  Better fast than poison yourself.

 (3)  THOU SHALL DRINK PLENTY OF WATER DAILY  (The law of elimination).

It is more important to be clean inside than out.  The body must be flushed with plenty of water.  The body is four-fifths water.  Every function even, requires the use of water.  The proper elimination of poisons and waste matter is largely dependent upon keeping the system  daily flushed with plenty of water.  Drink two quarts of water daily and be clean.

 (4)   THOU SHALL EXERCISE  (The law of motion).

Lack of motion leads to atrophy or death... .  Most of the numerous systems of exercise are beneficial.

(5)  THOU SHALL LEARN HOW TO REST   (The law of relaxation).

Work never killed anyone  -  fatigue through improper tension kills millions.  Relaxation is rest.  In the midst of the most arduous labour - relax. Rest for two or three minutes - physically and mentally.  Shift your attention. Think of something pleasant.  Fill the lungs with fresh air.  Drink a glass of water.  Then return to your work rejuvenated.  Sleep eight hours nightly.  Clear out all cobwebs from the mind before going to sleep.  Take a mental bath.  Let your last thoughts be happy, constructive, aspiring and you will awaken refreshed and renewed.

(6)  THOU SHALL CONTROL THY THOUGHTS  (The law of mental control).

The mind is master of destiny.  We are what we think...... Think happiness - content will banish unrest.

(7)   THOU SHALL CONTROL THY EMOTIONS  (The law of emotional  control).

The emotions are not to be despised - they are the essence of all radiant life.  Love, sympathy, joy and even sorrow - without these man is an automaton. But destructive emotions poison the blood stream, tear down the brain cells and kill the body tissues.  Envy, hate, jealousy, worry, fear - these are "The Great Destroyers."  They kill, wreck and maim more  than all organic  diseases combined...

(8)  THOU SHALL LOVE  (This is the eight law in our list, but the first of all in importance).

Love is the great cleanser, the divine factor in human life, the redeeming and ennobling potency.  It is love that sweetens life.  Love is the essence of civilization...Be spendthrift of love.  Love your family, your friends, your enemies....Love is health.  Love is happiness.  Love is success.

 (9)   THOU SHALL HAVE FAITH  (The law of perspective).

Faith turns defeat into victory, fear into hope,  impossibilities into glorious achievements.  With faith  nothing is impossible...In the Subconscious we are all alike.  Therein dwells our secret divinity.   Break through the crust of the Conscious mind, the product of chance, circumstance and environment, to the Source of all Power...Believe in yourself, your mission, your fellow, the world in which you live, essential rightness of the cosmic plans, the Power behind all objective manifestations...Faith can cure any disease if rightly directed - diseases of the body, mind and spirit.

 (10)  THOU SHALL WORK  (The law of creative effort).

Health, happiness and success belong to the man who is not afraid  to work, to do his best, to do more than he is paid for...Work purifies, keeps life sane and wholesome....   branche link5

SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES

The classic symptoms of diabetes mellitus, which can show up at any age, are frequent urination, frequent thirst, and weight loss.

These symptoms are a result of high levels of sugar in the blood.  The body draws a great deal of water from the tissues to filter and excrete the excess sugar, which leads to more frequent urination.  In response to this loss of sugar and water, people often want to drink (and sometimes eat) large amounts.  But the body struggles to keep up with the constant dehydration and loss of sugar, so weight loss often occurs.

High blood sugar levels can also cause blurred vision, and in more severe cases, confusion and abnormal breathing. In addition to these immediate symptoms of high blood sugar, there are slowly progressive symptoms of diabetes that people may only notice if they reflect back on changes from previous months or years. Gradually worsening vision and decreased sensation in the hands and/or feet are two of the more common symptoms noted over the years in people with untreated diabetes.

Many other long-term complications can occur, such as stroke, kidney damage, erectile dysfuncton, and heart attack.  Therefore, people with any of these problems should be checked for diabetes. See your doctor if you have any of these symptoms, especially if you have a family history of diabetes.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY?

In addition to helping to control your weight, research shows that regular physical activity can reduce your risk for several diseases and conditions and improve your overall quality of life.  Regular physical activity can help protect you from the following health problems:

Studies on the psychological effects of exercise have found that regular activity can  improve your mood and the  way you feel about yourself. Researchers also have found that exercise is likely to reduce depression and anxiety and help you to better manage stress.

Keep these health benefits in mind when deciding whether or not to exercise. And remember, any amount of physical activity you do is better than none at all.

There was a man who had four sons. He wanted his
sons to learn not to judge things too quickly. So
he sent them each on a quest, in turn, to go and
look at a pear tree that was a great distance away.

The first son went in the winter,
the second in the spring,
the third in summer, and
the youngest son in the fall.

When they had all gone and come back, he called
them together to describe what they had seen.

The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent,
and twisted.

The second son said no--it was covered with green
buds and full of promise.

The third son disagreed, he said it was laden with
blossoms that smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful,
it was the most graceful thing he had ever seen.

The last son disagreed with all of them; he said
it was ripe and drooping with fruit, full of life
and fulfilment.

The man then explained to his sons that they were
all right, because they had each seen but ONLY
one season in the tree's life. He told them that
you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by only one
season, and that the essence of who they are--and
the pleasure, joy, and love that come from that
life -- can only be measured at the end, when all
the seasons are up.

If you give up when it's winter, you will miss the
promise of your spring, the beauty of your summer,
fulfilment of your fall. Don't let the pain of one
season destroy the joy of all the rest. Don't judge
life by one difficult season.

Persevere through the difficult patches and better
times are sure to come some time or later.

Why is the sky blue?

The sky appears blue to us on a clear day, because the atoms of nitrogen and oxygen in the atmosphere separate the sun's white light into its many colours, and scatter them throughout the atmosphere.

The wavelength of the blue light scatters better than the rest, predominates over the other colours in the light spectrum, and makes the sky appear blue to us.

The scientific name for this phenomenon is the Tyndall effect, more commonly known as Rayleigh scattering.
